Diane & Annita - "Groovy Kind of Love"
Diane & Annita cut the
first version of "Groovy" for Florence Greenberg's Scepter Records, which
was initially only released in France. Not much is known about this duo,
although a fairly reliable witness claims he spent time in the studio with
them, discounting the rumors that this was actually co-writer Carole Bayer
doing the lead. Scepter Records was known to have their artists put vocals
over the original song demo tracks (not the only company persuing this cost
saving practice), and that might have been the basis for the confusion.
Patti Labelle & the
Bluebells cut the second version (produced by the legendary Bert Berns), for
their debut Atlantic LP, which was released as the B-side of "Over The Rainbow."
The Mindbenders proved the old adage, "Third Time's The Charm."
